Congratulations to the PICTFOR Twitter Awards Winners
Sixty Parliamentarians and Parliamentary staff gathered Wednesday night for @PictforUK‘s First Annual Twitter Awards in conjunction with PoliticsHome. Top honours went to Sajid Javid MP (@sajidjavid) for Greatest Increase In Followers, Aidan Burley MP (@AidanBurleyMP) for Most Mentioned, and Lord Bassam (@SteveTheQuip) for “Peer of the Year”. Paul Waugh (@paulwaugh) of PoliticsHome served as Master of Ceremonies for a fantastic new annual event.
Before the Awards, Parliamentarians received a masterclass from Twitter’s Steve Summers (@pocketsteve) on how best to use the platform to engage with constituents and the world at large.
Paul Waugh wrote in his morning Waugh Room Memo on Thursday:
I had the honour to present the first Twitter Awards for the Parliamentary ICT Forum (PICTFOR) in the Commons last night. There was also a ‘teach-in’ and Twitter’s Steve Summers had some excellent tips to help Members make more sophisticated use of their accounts.
As for the awards, Treasury minister Sajid Javid won the award for biggest percentage growth in followers for 2012/13 (and the fact that we both hail from Rochdale has nothing to do with his victory, no, not at all). The award for ‘most mentions’ went to Aidan Burley, who accepted his prize with good grace, as did runner up Fiona MacTaggart.
Shadow Lords Chief Whip Lord Bassam won Peer of the Year for his deft use of Twitter and for the overall Labour Lords team’s pioneering use of blogs and other online tools. It’s been a big week for Steve: he turned 60 and got married (and had a cake that neatly split both celebrations). Congrats to all concerned.
