PICTFOR Co-Chair Chi Onwurah to host the Digital Heroes Awards 2013
PICTFOR is delighted to announce that our Parliamentary Co-Chair, Chi Onwurah MP, will be hosting the TalkTalk Digital Heroes Awards 2013. The awards are designed to recognise and reward people who are using technology to help their communities.
Since it began six years ago, the competition has provided funding and support to 62 organisations across Britain, including Newcastle City Library, in Ms Onwurah’s constituency, who won an award in 2012 for a programme using bingo to drive up digital skills.
Research suggests that 7.1 million UK adults have still never been online and 16 million lack basic online skills required to take advantage of digital tools. The awards will celebrate those organisations, like Newcastle City Library, that are trying to tackle the digital divide. PICTFOR are proud to lend support to the aims of the awards, which champion digital technology as a tool to help communities and local people.
The awards are run in partnership with the Daily Mirror and charities Citizens Online and Go ON UK. The public will vote to select twelve winners, one from each region of the UK, to win £5,000 each to enhance their digital projects. One overall winner will receive £10,000. Baroness Martha Lane Fox will also present an award for the Young Digital Hero on behalf of Go ON UK, with a prize of £4,000 for the winner’s chosen charity and an Apple MacBook Air.
The awards ceremony will be held 29th October, and PICTFOR MPs encourage entries from organisations in their constituency and across Britain. Please go to www.talktalkdigitalheroes.co.uk to enter a submission. The deadline for entries is August 14, 2013.
